# 📧 Does NYT “hate” military families?

I'm forwarding this email I sent to [*The Oregonian*](https://gijustice.com/blog/oregonian-hate-military-families) because [David](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/18/us/damien-rodriguez-marine-portland.html?ref=gijustice.com) \[Philipps\] and [Michael](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/03/podcasts/the-daily/hate-crime-damien-rodriguez-marine.html?ref=gijustice.com) \[Barbaro\] picked up on their story back in 2017\. Turns out, calling what happened a "hate crime" was (civilian) confirmation bias, because Rodriguez's charge was not a "hate crime." In fact, the Oregon law in question, [ORS 166.155](https://oregon.public.law/statutes/ors%5F166.155?ref=gijustice.com), does not use the word "hate," and never has. Not in [1981](https://archives.oregonlegislature.gov/ORS%5FArchives/1981-Chapter-166.pdf?ref=gijustice.com) when it was introduced, nor in amendments prior to your "reporting," in [1989](https://archives.oregonlegislature.gov/ORS%5FArchives/1989-Chapter-166.pdf?ref=gijustice.com), [2007](https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/bills%5Flaws/archive/2007ors166.pdf?ref=gijustice.com), or [2011](https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/bills%5Flaws/archive/2011ors166.pdf?ref=gijustice.com). Anyway, **you better retract that shit before I find Damien Rodriguez**, because he might have a legal standing to sue... And after that [ABC settlement](https://apnews.com/article/abc-trump-lawsuit-defamation-stephanopoulos-04aea8663310af39ae2a85f4c1a56d68?ref=gijustice.com), defamation just became a whole lot easier. 😬
