# GI Hater: Mufid Elfgeeh

Mufid Elfgeeh, a naturalized citizen and pizza shop owner in New York City, purchased a firearm and silencer with plans to murder a regular customer serving in the Army. He was arrested on May 31, 2014, and although [Section 4712](https://gijustice.com/soldiers-amendment/) of the [Hate Crimes Prevention Act](https://gijustice.com/content/files/2026/05/hcpa-14.html) made it a hate crime to target victims “on account of their military service,” Elfgeeh was never charged with a hate crime under [18 U.S.C. § 1389](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1389?ref=gijustice.com).
