📧 “Reconnecting re. military civil rights”
Hi Lauren (Katzenberg),
It was good to meet you last night. I'm following up about a pitch I sent as you were departing T&P, about the lack of civil rights for soldiers and veterans. Attached to this email are a couple of PDFs I've been sharing with members of Congress that I developed after I filed a nondiscrimination complaint as a "protected veteran" at Duke University.
After I reported multiple accounts of anti-military harassment and discovered my PTS diagnosis was equated to an intellectual handicap I asserted my rights under VEVRAA & ADA, but the agencies tasked with enforcing them failed to provide me the due process that every American deserves. The incompetence of executive agencies, coupled with a military culture that discourages self-reporting and stigmatizes those who seek help, ensures that subtle forms of bias and discrimination will continue, which is why I think At War’s target market benefits from learning more.
It is my hope that investigative journalism can help shape the conversation to include civil rights as integral to the debate about care for military communities. I’d love to discuss this in greater detail with you and/or At War staff. Is it possible to arrange a phone call or schedule a time to have coffee sometime?

Hi Logan,
Thanks for your email. I'll read through these attachments. I have also passed them along to David Philipps. the Times' veterans report.
Kindly,
Lauren

Thank you for giving them some of your time and attention. I am meeting with four Hill staffers Thursday, I don’t know if you’re in DC, but perhaps a coffee in the afternoon to discuss the issues if you’re around?
