Logan Isaac: [00:00:00] It is Thursday, November 3rd at 4:52 PM I'm going to call Stanley Hallas. He emailed me, um, asking me to remove the posters for the class that he, um, co-developed with me. Um, I'm not, I've, I've advertised as being supervised by him. Um, but in reality, I think political science, um. I think it's just me on paper.

I think my name will be the one on the transcript, so I'm not sure what formal, um, relationship he has with the course anymore, but I'm going to call him and ask him for. Clarification as to why he's asked me to remove them. He cited competition with Amy, lower Hall's war class. Um, the course material is different.

The subject is different. I'm actually talking about military personnel and veterans not war. Um, we're not engaging in abstractions in my course. Um. Uh, I'm also doing it from a firsthand [00:01:00] perspective. And so if the, if there's any intellectual rigor, I think that if there's, I, I don't think there's a competition.

The timeframe is different. Um, the school where it's being presented is different. Um, so students can actually take both if they wanted to.

Hello? Oh, hi Stanley. Sorry, I just saw your email, but I didn't actually open it yet. I just figured a, a call might be easier.

Stanley Hauerwas: Oh, uh, Logan?

Logan Isaac: Yes. Sorry.

Stanley Hauerwas: Yeah, I, I just said, I don't know if it took them down and I don't remember hearing the, you sharing the poster with me.

Logan Isaac: Uhhuh.

Stanley Hauerwas: Um, uh, I don't think you did Logan, because I would've been taken aback by my picture being so prominent on it. But, but the things need to be taken down.

Logan Isaac: Uh, [00:02:00] okay. Um, okay. Did you see them and didn't like them? Or, or has somebody asked you about that? They were taken down.

Stanley Hauerwas: Um, Amy Laura called, uh, put an email this morning and said, she's doing the war, of course, Uhhuh. And, and I, and I said, I didn't know that. And, but this course it doesn't have, isn't in the definitive school. And I thought it was primarily for undergraduates and she wanted the poster taken down because she thought some students were suggesting that this was in competition with her and that was perfectly appropriate. And I just, and so we just need to take them down.

Logan Isaac: Okay. Um, I sent you an email on October 27th with a picture of the flyers and the only thing I changed, I think was, was some of the wording. Um, I know it probably got lost in the shuffle. Um, I know it probably got less than a shuffle. Um, is this a course that you'd like to [00:03:00] continue to be associated with?

Stanley Hauerwas: Uh, I'm, I'm committed to being there two or three times.

Logan Isaac: Um, well, okay. But you're worried about your picture on it.

Stanley Hauerwas: If you don't want me, I'll be glad not to be there.

Logan Isaac: That's not my concern. It is difficult, uh, to keep track, um, of how best to not ask too much, but to ask appropriately, um, a scholar who has written on this subject, um, and whose writings have affected the, the course material that I'm focusing on. I'm actually focusing on. Military soldiers, veterans, um, is Amy. Laura has not communicated with me. I haven't seen a syllabus. Um, it sounds as though, um, that she's dealing in abstractions the phenomenon of war. Um, it's also at a different time. Um, and divinity students in particular seem to be interested in this subject.[00:04:00] I,

Stanley Hauerwas: Logan, if you want me involved at all. Don't go after the Divinity School students if some of them find their way in and fine. Okay.

Logan Isaac: Um, I, I don't know what to say to them.

Stanley Hauerwas: Well, I'm sorry, Logan, but that's my, that's what I have to tell you, that, that don't want to make life in the divinity school more complex than it already is, and I'm, I'm retired. And I, and I do not want to make the life of the new Dean any more complicated than it's,

Logan Isaac: how would this be making Dean's life complicated?

Stanley Hauerwas: I can't, Logan, just take what I've just said and, and don't, don't argue further with me. I'm just telling you what, if you want me involved is the bottom [00:05:00] line.

Logan Isaac: Yeah, I understand it's an ultimatum.

Um, I, okay, I'll, I'll have to get back to you. Um,

Stanley Hauerwas: you're gonna take 'em down.

Logan Isaac: I'm not promising anything.

Stanley Hauerwas: Well, if you don't take 'em down, you can, you can kiss me Goodbye.

Logan Isaac: Yes, I understand that. You've made that very clear. Okay. Good bye.

And that is. The call, um, take him down or say goodbye to Stanley Hwas. And I think he's implying any appearances that he might make. Um, I, yeah, uh, I don't know what to say, um, other than I think I have to go to PoliSci and tell them if he's no longer associated with it. Anyway, um, yeah, that was the call.
