20170124 📧 Munger “no one want[s] this course taught”

@ 0652

Hi Dr. Munger,

How would I go about applying for [the Virtues of War] to be repeated in the Fall for regular funding? Some ROTC cadets were very interested in taking it, but there was a scheduling conflict. LTC Longkamp, the professor of military science, also expressed interest in coursework on just war theory, which I think I remember you mentioning as well. I was thinking I could sub out the broader policy stuff I currently include for specific military ethics material for the last few weeks.

I've also been speaking with Bryan Royer, the veterans outreach representative in HR, about interest within the veteran workforce here at Duke. Apparently one or two employees saw the flyer and asked about auditing. He said he is happy to advertise it among employees, but I figured it was a bit late for that at this point.

While there was not a large enrollment this semester, with more time to advertise the course ahead of time, I think it could go a long way to bridging some gaps between military and nonmilitary members of the Duke community. OIE's support of the course certainly suggests the value of engaging directly with the material, but as a newbie to adjuncting here at Duke, I am not sure how the process works.

Do you have any guidance?

@ 0843

Always hard the first time, getting enrollment

I think Kenan Ethics funded it, right? You could ask them again.  Poli Sci listed it as a favor to Kenan, and we could do that again. But we have no budget for "outside" courses....

@ 0846

Thanks for replying, Dr. Munger.

My understanding is Kenan cross listed, but POLSCI was host. At least my impression from Suzanne Price was that it was the POLSCI curriculum committee that gave it final approval.

What would it require for it to be accepted as an internal course?

@ 0942

As far as I can see it was not fundedicated by Poli Sci.  Yes Poli Sci is the "host" but that's just the listing in ACES

internal courses are taught by Poli Sci faculty.  Sometimes we hire a visitor to fill in but that's for a course already on the books

Stanley H is a poli Sci faculty  member. We added the course bc Stanley was involved.  That no longer is true, right?

@ 0945

Right, he got called to teach a Divinity course.

Hm. Is there any way you can think of to offer it again, but with adjunct funding?

@ 0956

That's not really the problem.   The problem is that no one in Poli Sci has any reason to want this course taught.

We only hosted it in the first place bc of Stanley.

@ 1009

Oh, I didn't realize. His name didn't make it into Duke Hub, so my impression was that it was approved either on its own merits or in some way related to OIE's support.

Thanks for letting me know, and for the opportunity!
