Yes
If not, what was your job title?
NA
What are your current job duties as it relates to hiring TA employees?
My current job has nothing to do with teaching assistants. In 2015, my duties included helping people figure out how to pay for their education at Duke, received financial aid, recruited students, and reviewed applications. We recruit doctoral students as well.
What were your duties during January 1, 2015 to August 2016?
Same, see #3 above

I hired two employees who directly report to me. There is a governing hiring procedure posted on the intranet. I currently supervise 3 direct reports, 3 employees fall under my direct reports. I supervise 2 directors who have subordinates and we have two students as well who are under my supervision.

II. HIRING:
Do you know the complainant (Logan Martin Isaac)? When did you know him?
I met Logan Isaac during the time frame when Isaac was a divinity student. Isaac graduated in September 2013; I was Director of Academic Programs when I met Mr. Isaac, but I am not aware that Isaac contacted the Dean.
How long have you known him?
I have known Mr. Isaac since 2010.
What is your employment relationship with the complainant?
I did not have an employment relationship with Isaac.
On February 29, 2016, the Complainant, Logan Martin Isaac, brought his concerns about how veterans are treated at Duke University to the interim Dean, Ellen Davis. What do you know about this event?
I do not know (about these concerns)
Why did you deny equal representation to Mr. Isaac and other protected veterans during student orientations?
Orientation is for all incoming students to welcome them into the school. Isaac wanted to speak for 20 minutes during orientation. I agree the vet issues are important, however, it was inappropriate to allow Isaac to speak for 20 minutes (at the time he had no Duke affiliation) he was not a member of the Duke student veterans group—he was head of a non-profit, non-Duke affiliated veteran's group called Centurions Guild that is not affiliated with Duke University.
The Complainant alleges that you refused to speak directly to veteran students about ways of improving veteran situations and opted to work with [redacted (7)(C)]. Please can you explain this situation? Is [redacted (7)(C)] a veteran?
I allowed him to be present as an exception because he had no formal reason or obligation to participate. Isaac did not attend the orientation, instead he sent representative from the Centurions Guild on 8/26/13. [Redacted (7)(C)] is a faculty member, who works with [redacted (7)(C)]. He is not a veteran himself.
The Complainant alleges that he was retaliated against because of his veteran status and filed an informal complaint. Then, he was reinstated as a TA. He also stated that he is suffering from mental anguish resulting from his employment with Duke University. Are you aware of these allegations? Please explain.
I am unaware of Isaac's mental issues as it is outside of the scope of my responsibilities.
Did the complainant's veteran status play a role in the decision of not being selected during the first round of TA selection after Spring Semester of 2016? Please explain.
NA
The Complainant also alleges retaliation for asking questions concerning veterans because he was subsequently not invited back as a TA after Spring Semester of 2016. What is your response to this allegation?
NA
Did the complainant's questioning about veteran status concern play a role in the decision of not being invited him back as a TA after Spring Semester of 2016? Please explain.
NA
Do you know who makes the final decision on TA selection or rejection? If yes provide the name/names
The Associate Dean of Academic Program (Miller) makes ultimate decision for TA selection.
Can employees appeal rejection decision? If yes please explain.
I believe there is an appeal process for TAs who are not hired, most current doctoral students get the TA positions it is rare that those outside the doctoral programs get hired.
III. DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE:
When did you become aware of the complainant's veteran status? Please provide date.
I realized Isaac was a vet in 2010, because he is very public about his veteran status. I learned his vet status informally when I heard him talk about him wanting to organize a student vet group.
Did you ask complainant about his veteran status? When? How? Where? How did you react? Explain.
See above #16.
Do you know of other employees at Duke University who are veterans? If yes, have they ever mentioned discrimination or negative treatment? Please be specific.
I am aware of other employees who are vets--Dan Struble, Manager, and Matt Floating, Manager, neither of them mentioned any negative treatment toward veterans. While in Stubble's office I saw memorabilia, that is how I learned he was a vet, Floating led a vet group.
