I may not have been clear about what you meant by bringing on a more established scholar. Did you mean to have them come on as some kind of co-author, or just in terms of sources that I quote? I had in mind the former, but the latter would be easy to do, as I'm fine with not using Hays or Kalantzis.

@ 1203 from The Century

Oh I definitely had in mind the latter. I don't think you need a co-author, by any means. I just meant as interlocutor within your own argument.

Sorry for the misunderstanding!

No worries. What do you think can be done around the self-criticism issue, what could be improved (and/or how) without necessarily reinforcing self-doubt within military families? I understand the need for humility, but it is a very narrow path the thread that needle, given the prevalence of toxic pacifism and also military suicide. I didn't mean to shut CC down, but the expectation does seem to call for flexibility in particular cases like the one I hope to address.

@ 1337 from The Century

I think if:

1) you find a biblical scholar whose work over all you basically like who is also a Century sort of person (i.e. not Catholic and not evangelical, but probably some sort of Protestant)

2) you use this person's work to set up the biblical passages that you want to give a new reading to and

3) you show that their (the scholar's) reading is good but insufficient, then I think you are creating a stage for your argument that works.

When I said self-critical, I don't mean of you or of military members of any kind. I meant that the Century likes to engage in self-critique, so if you can find someone whose work is respected and admired in these circles and then show a new dimension from your own experience, the critique falls back on the scholar and so on the Century. That sounded convoluted--I haven't been getting a lot of sleep lately-- argh. What I mean is that the Century doesn't like to publish pieces that say, "Look how stupid those evngelicals/Mormons/Catholics/others are being." We try to keep the focus on ourselves and how we could produce fuller and better understandings of biblical texts.

I hope that helps. My brain is mush-o-rama at the moment.
