📧 JBIC "chains" reference

20220401 @ 0814 to Shane

Shane, in an RLC podcast that went live on March 17th, titled "Faith Forum | War + Militarism" you seemed to use my language from JBIC. After Diana Oestreicht spoke, you said that one veteran "in particular said 'these are my chains'".

Because this so closely resembles what I wrote, I have to insist you refrain from using this reference unless you clearly and explicitly indicate I am not the veteran in question. I know you are participating in the MLK event at Riverside Church tomorrow and I will not have anything to do with the military getting dragged or the military history of the civil rights movement being white-washed.

I've CCed Leslie Smith, the Simple Way attorney involved in a related matter last year, and my partner, Laura, so that there is a record of my request in the event action must be taken to publicly disassociate myself from demeaning stereotypes you have propagated about soldiers and veterans.

Logan - I hope you and Laura are well.

In regards to your email, I have a collection of dog tags from veterans who have felt compelled  over the years to give their dog tags to me. The first was many years ago, and I’ve had several veterans share similar sentiments as they have given them to me - (taking off the heavy yoke or burden, breaking the chains, releasing the burden…) and I have prayed with many of them. I keep them on my desk and on my person often to remind me that veterans and soldiers are also suffering deeply from the violence of war, trauma and suicide. As I was talking with Diana, that’s who I had in mind, and in fact what I saw on my desk.

I hope that provides clarity and addresses your concerns. -Shane

I’m sure I’m not the only veteran who has used this language, but I hope I’m the only one you failed to properly credit when you made a $26k advance with Zondervan and then disparaged to a senior VP. Thanks to your actions, my agent will not pitch to the press she called “the big cheese.”

Someone who follows both our work sent me the link to the podcast asking if I was the one you referenced re. chains. If you do not publicly clarify who you are/not referencing, then I will. It seems like it would be easier to just stop using the reference, but ultimately it’s your choice. I will not allow your behavior to continue to harm my professional reputation, even if I have little control over how it harms my battle buddies.
