20241016 📧 “Harris on military civil rights” to Sullivan
Yes it is helpful, and it reminds me that the AG stuff is just one specific manifestation of the problem I am trying to get Christians to talk about, which is that military families are not treated with human dignity. Denying people the rights their service secures for others is not just dehumanizing, it's a form of social death - the fruit of my labor for democracy is not just being consumed by the civilian majority, I can't even eat the scraps falling from the table (the federal employment discrimination law for veterans was called "no law at all" by a retired Justice O'Connor in 2008). That's why military suicide prevention without civil rights is a fight with both arms tied behind our backs.
I can't send you a complete draft because I am not a professional journalist. If you, or any editor you know, would be interested in putting in the time to "pull string" and/or mentor me through writing something substantive, I would rejoice at the opportunity. But most media institutions are skeleton-staffed, making it hard for minority communities to receive equitable representation in the news. If you know of someone willing and able to put in the work to normalize this issue, please let me know. There are things unfolding in Oregon that will make it harder for the media to ignore for much longer. If America Magazine wants to get ahead of it, I'd love to hear from y'all.
